Discussion Questions for 2/3

1. I keep thinking about the story shift between The Sun Also Rises and Pride and Prejudice. What do you think the main differences are between the romantic elements of these novels? Could these elements only be seen as differences between masculine and feminine writers?

2. As we've seen so far in this novel, "first impressions" seem to mean everything to these characters. Elizabeth relies on this notion of "first impressions" when it comes to judging/trusting Mr. Wickham, and instantly favors him more than Mr. Darcy. Why do you think she is so quick to trust Wickham and what he says, based on first impressions alone? What does that say about Elizabeth?

  1. I think Elizabeth is quick to trust Wickham because he comes across as a very charming man. Darcy on the other hand comes across as very abrasive and unwelcoming when Elizabeth first meets him, which makes her prejudice against him understandable. I think its ironic because this shows that Elizabeth posses the same character flaw of being prejudice, which seems to be the exact thing that makes her despise Darcy.
