Why are their names Mr. and Mrs. Spring Fragrance?
What is the significance of the pendant?
On page 507 Laura and Mrs. Spring Fragrance are having a conversation. Laura was upset with the idea of having to marry Man You. Mrs. Spring Fragrance says something to Laura that changes Laura's demeanor. The author Sui Sin Far omits this part of the conversation. Why do you think Sui Sin Far does this? What do you think was said?
I think Mrs. Spring Fragrance tells her something of the plan she has to find another wife for Man You, if not in so many words. It's interesting to think that even as "Americanized" as the relationship ideals in "Mrs. Spring Fragrance" are, the character is still playing a modified game of matchmaker for Laura's betrothed.
