A little google search for "Boston Marriage" brought me to
this article from the 2001 Ms. Magazine. It gives some background on the term, contemplates different kinds of relationships between women, and (I think) intersects with our class discussion quite well.
This was a very interesting, informative article and all I kept thinking, as I read it, was what a great arrangement it was for these ladies! I have had a couple of good friends in my life that I would have probably gotten along very well with if we had lived together like that; but, I know I would have had to constantly explain and defend our arrangement (see I can't even say relationship) to other people, and especially family, because they would not understand. I think there are societal norms that reject these kind of nontraditional ideas. It will probably take a lot of years and a lot more "Boston Marriages" to remove the stigma off this mutually beneficial arrangement.
