Discussion Questions for Friday 2-3-12

1. Does this book work better as a satirical mockery of the times or a delightful love story?

2. Does Mr. Bingley even deserve Jane after listening to his sisters and Darcy?

  1. To answer the second question - I think that people, even fictional ones, make mistakes and should be given second chances. Jane seems like just the person to give Bingley a second chance. I haven't read past what we are supposed to read for Monday, but it seems like Jane would gladly take Bingley back once the mistakes and misunderstandings were explained and Bingley sincerely apologized. I'm not sure how much love is about whether or not you deserve it. And it's not as if Bingley had lead Jane on, promising to marry her and then cutting off the engagement because Darcy and Miss Bingley told him to.

  2. I think Austen's juggling of different genres here--love story, satire, society piece--make for interesting discussion. Good questions, Shelbi!
