1. What do you think Freeman may be trying to say about the nature of domestic partnerships, romance, and gender roles with The Two Friends? Are Abby and Sarah a romantic couple? Does it matter? Would you receive the story differently if one or both characters were male?
2. What did you think of the ending? Is there anything left to be resolved?
Both of Freeman's stories offer insight into what happens when gender roles change. What I got from her story is that it is OK if woman don't conform to gender roles, and they are capable of leading happy, fulfilling lives with out a man in the picture.
