Leftover discussion question, 1/30

This one's from Amelia:
Jake looks down on Robert because he is completely shaped and controlled by the women in his life, but isn't Jake just as obedient to Brett?

  1. The fact that Jake takes Brett to Romero, immediately leaps to answer Brett's telegram, and goes to her rescue in Madrid certainly makes it seem that way. But Jake has a life independent of Brett. He goes fishing with Bill; he enjoys a pleasant vacation in San Sebastian - without Brett. In contrast, Robert's entire life revolves around Brett. He seems more lost than usual when she's not around, and he can't bear the thought of her being with someone else.

  2. Yea, I agree with Bethany. Jake may cater to Brett when he is around her, or more specifically whenever she expresses to him (either verbally or nonverbally) that she wants something, but he also has a life of his own. He enjoys his time hanging with Bill, and has plenty of male friends that he spends time with, while seemingly not thinking about Brett at all. Robert, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have any "true" friends, and thus follows Brett around wherever she goes.
