Leftover discussion question, 1/30, part 3

This one's from Shelbi:
Who is the character with the most depth? Who do we think is most likely to succeed after the story is over?

  1. Personally, I believe Jake has the most depth out of any of the characters. Then again, the reader does have the advantage of getting his inner thoughts and monologue, however, I believe there is more to his character than that. He is intrepid, and makes a point of moving on with his life. We see a change occur in his character upon leaving and returning to Paris. He still views Brett in an affectionate manner, however, he is able to let her go. He finally comes to a realization that they will never be together.

  2. I would argue that Robert is the deepest because he wears his heart on his sleeve. We do get inside Jake's mind somewhat and do get instances of emotional pain as a reaction to his injury, but Robert seems to me to have the most emotion. We see Robert angry, happy, sad, desperate, and so on.

  3. I agree with Ryan on this. I think he was intentionally set up to be untouched by the war. The anti-semitism was probably just an excuse because he had a purity that the rest would never have. Plus, he can at least physically defend himself, and hopefully not cry afterward again.
