1/25: Another leftover discussion question (more of a Franken-question)...

Several versions/iterations of this came up as I read over your questions: anyone care to defend Brett? (Her actions with Cohn, her rejection of Jake, etc.)

  1. Honestly, I have no sympathy for Lady Brett. Due to the fact that she is engaged to be married, I believe that she should act in a faithful manner. However, were she single, it would be hard to find fault with her. I also do not care for the way she treats Jake.

  2. Brett is a coy skank. Sorry to put it bluntly, but that is how I feel about her. However, I don't have much respect for any of the major male characters either, as they continue to be stomped all over by the women in the story. The men need to man up and quit getting tied up in their emotions, and the women need to quit using the men's sexual desires against them.

  3. I agree with Ryan 100%! The woman is a skank. I mean who really is engaged to one man, tells another man she loves him, sleeps with another, and leads on still more? In all honesty, I can't really gag her. I think she needs to act less trashy and more classy. I mean she *IS* "Lady" Brett.

  4. I really don't like Brett either, for reasons stated above.

    *SPOILERS FOR FRIDAY'S READING*

However, I do appreciate that she is the one character who admits what I've suspected all along: she's using drinking as an escape. When she and Jake are talking about Pedro Romero, she says, "I can't just stay tight all the time" (187). Now, she's really just swapping one form of escapism (drunknenness) for another (whatever she has in mind with Romero). But at least she recognizes and admits it.

  5. Yikes...I wish we would/could avoid terms like "skank" when referring to Brett or characters like her (sexual women) unless you are kidding a bit (which is harder to express on a blog). It's much more productive to think about why she does what she does, why the men accept and even encourage that behavior, etc.

  6. I think defining Brett as a sexual women is a major understatement. Sure, women have just as much right as men to have relations with whoever they want. However, she is in essence an adulterer, sleeping with numerous men (well, I guess that is up to the reader's interpretation) while being engaged to Mike. And, maybe worst of all, she dangles her sexuality in front of all the characters, using her body as a tease. Again, not defending the male characters in the story, as I think they are quite pathetic. Just because Mike allows Brett to go off with men (although I feel it is killing him inside) does not make it right to do.
