1. I felt that edna drowning herself at the end was a cop-out on her maternal duties. Do you all feel as if this shows that she is not a good mother because of this act?
2. These children do not seem to have much of a parental influence on either front. Do you all think that this will cause even more problems with these children later on down the line BECAUSE they have lacked real, long standing, parental guidance?
To answer question 2 the lack of parental presence could negatively affect these children later in their lives, but I would argue that it probably won't based on the way Chopin portrays them. They seem to be well adjusted and independent young children. I would argue that if poor parenting was going to have a negative impact on their lives the children would have already been showing signs by acting out. Chopin does not imply this at all. Yes our parents and the role they play in our lives can influence who we become but they do not determine who we are. So I guess the short answer is not necessarily.
ReplyDeleteAlso keep in mind the role of class here. Women like Edna didn't "raise" their children the ways average women do today (whatever that means...)
