Throughout the book Oscar has relationship issues with females. He is awkward and cannot seem to maintain a "normal" relationship with a female. I think the fact that he falls in love with a prostitute is just reiterating the awkwardness of Oscar's romantic life and that Oscar will never be able to have a "normal" relationship with a "normal" woman.
